Hands Inspired by Natureとは
「天・地 」＝ 「雨・土」を手さばきする。
そんな意味あいから、「自然から触発される手」としたもので
いろんな人から知恵を借りて、生まれたタイトルである。
今回これを、22の言葉でも綴ることにし
「ロバート・キャンベル」さんが、
英訳を してくれるという幸運を得た。

Soil comes in all sorts of colors.
This simple fact I noticed at the age of thirty.
I found red soil back in the hills, yellow soil down by the river.
When I tried to plaster them together
I was praised – “Hey, that’s lovely” – which made me feel good.
Then thirteen years ago
I came across this blue-black soil,
the most beautiful soil I’d ever found.
土にはいろんな色がある。
そんな当たり前のことに気づいたのは30才の時だった。
近くの裏山に赤い土、
川べりに黄色い土を見つけた。
それらを試しに塗ってみたら
「きれいだね」と褒められてうれしくなった。
今から13年前、
山深い林の道で、青黒い土を見つけた。
私が見つけた一番美しい色である。

Every day I’d walk among the hills, along the river
and carry home soil I’d dug up.
I’d pour lots of water into it, mix it all up
put it through a sieve
and sort out gravel and leaves and branches
then set it out to dry in the sun.
Grinding this up left me
with lots of clear soil powder.
毎日、山や川を歩いて
掘り出した土を持ち帰った。
水をたっぷり入れて撹拌して
篩（ふるい）に通して、小石や木の葉や枝をより分ける。
そして陽の光で乾燥させる。
すり潰すと、きれいな土の粉ができあがる。
